What is CanSkate?

Learn-to-Skate (CanSkate)

CanSkate is a learn to skate program developed by Skate Canada.  Skaters will learn fundamental skating skills including forward and backward skating, stopping and turning.  The focus is on fun, participation as well as basic skill development. CanSkate provides an excellent foundation for all skating sports including figure skating, hockey, ringette, speed skating as well as recreational skating.

Lessons are given in a group format and are led by our Skate Canada NCCP certified professional coaches and are assisted by trained Program Assistants who are volunteers.  The program consists of 6 levels.  Skaters are grouped by age/ability and earn badges as they progress through levels designed to develop confidence and ability.

At each lesson, skaters can expect action, movement and fun! Lessons consist of a 10 minute warmup and a 30 minute group lesson.  The final 5 minutes is spent doing a cool down.  During the lesson, the skaters rotate through 3 stations:  Balance, Agility, and Control.  Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning.

Advanced CanSkate is offered to skaters in level 4 and 5 and provides an additional 10 minutes of instruction to help your skater progress to the StarSkate 1 program at a faster rate.
