Program Description:

AGES 3 AND UP.  NO PRIOR SKATING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!  YOUR CHILD WILL BE ASSIGNED TO A GROUP ON THE FIRST LESSON, BASED ON SKILL LEVEL.

CanSkate is a learn to skate program developed by Skate Canada.  Our CanSkate program is for children ages 3 and up, from complete beginners to those wishing to improve their basic skills whether their focus be for figure skating, hockey, speed skating or just skating for fun.  CanSkate provides an excellent foundation for all skating sports, as well as recreational skating.

Skaters will learn fundamental skating skills including forward and backward skating, stopping and turning.  The focus is on fun, participation as well as basic skill development.

Lessons are given in a group format and are led by our NCCP certified professional coaches and are assisted by trained program assistants.  The program consists of 6 levels.  Skaters are grouped by skill level and earn badges as they progress through levels designed to develop confidence and ability.

At each lesson, skaters can expect action, movement and fun! Lessons consist of a 5 minute warmup and a 40 minute group lesson.  With the help of the coaches and program assistants, the skaters rotate through 3 stations:  Balance, Agility, and Control.  Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning.

Program Description:

PRE-REQUISITE:  SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF LEVEL 3 CANSKATE OR AT THE RECOMMENDATION OF A COACH.

This 60 minute session combines the regular 45 minute CanSkate Learn-to-Skate session  from Skate Canada, with an additional 15 minute group lesson with a certified coach that will occur after the regular CanSkate session has completed.  So participants in this program will remain on the ice for an additional 15 minutes.  At just $10 more than the regular CanSkate program, Advanced CanSkate provides excellent value for your money.

The aim of this program is to provide additional instruction to participants who are completing the higher, challenging levels of CanSkate (Levels 4 &5).  In addition, participants will be on the ice at the same time as our figure skaters in the STAR program and thus will get a first hand glimpse at the STARSkate program and the sport of figure skating.

Who should take this program?

This program is completely optional and Levels 4 and 5 are still covered and taught in the regular CanSkate program.  However, if you answer yes to any of the following questions, consider Advanced CanSkate for your child:

- They are working on completing the higher levels of CanSkate and are finding it to be a challenge.

- They enjoy skating and would like the extra lesson with children and friends at their level.

- They have shown an interest in skating sports.

Please Note:  Helmets continue to be mandatory until skaters have passed Level 5 of CanSkate.
